Valuing Black Students' Voices in Math:
MathTrust Partners with Solution Spaces, My Mathematical Mind, & Dr. Nicole Joseph for
Groundbreaking Math Research

September 2025

🎥 Happy to share some of the research that Solution Spaces has been doing with three brilliant math educators for the past six months with the Gates-funded Math Narrative Project. It's been an honor to create and ideate with Dionne Aminata, Dr. Nicole Joseph, and Deborah Peart Creighton. We deeply believe in elevating Black students' voices in the math classroom because they deserve to be heard, seen, and given opportunities to grow as doers of mathematics. Special thanks to Pamela Brett for interviewing us on her Blue Glasses Math platform.

🙌 We're also training a cohort of California teachers to recognize the importance of prioritizing relationship-building in the math classroom.

📉 We all know where the statistics fall for Black students' overall performance in math...we are working to change those statistics.

RWR taps Solution Spaces to Strengthen Pre-K and K Math Learners

July 2025

Solution Spaces spent two weeks working with children ages 4, 5, and 6 this summer. We engaged in math activities that support counting collections, subitizing, one-to-one correspondence, and choral counting.

⭐️ The children were wonderful. They were creative and inquisitive, funny and focused.

🗣️ They grew in their counting from day one to now, all in their own ways, and they loved helping each other count on their fingers. The data we collected told the story.

💚 All of the students demonstrated growth (at different levels) in various aspects of the five counting principles from week one to the end of week two.

➡️ Says RWR CEO Raegan Conlin, "This summer, we branched out to include math instruction. With the expertise and guidance of Adrienne Baytops Paul, RWR focused on building relationships, developing a strong mathematical identity, building core mathematical understandings, and strengthening building blocks. With all of the scholars making growth, we will certainly be taking advantage of these relationships whenever possible!!"

Solution Spaces: Empowering Math Teachers at Year's End

Feb-June 2025

Solution Spaces was contracted to work in two schools in the spring of 2025. Our founder also spoke at the Black Male Educators Convening.

Lesson internalization was the request, but so much more took place.

Grades 3-5 teachers learned about the Math Shifts, the three aspects of rigor, anticipating misconceptions, and more.

Observations were performed and debriefed in professional learning community meetings. We provided rich and implementable feedback so teachers could improve their lesson preparation, instruction, and student outcomes.
